How To Break Your Dog From Digging

Writer's picture: Love On A LeashLove On A Leash

Does your dog dig in your garden, beautiful green grass or under your fence? We have all been there! There are a few reasons as to why your dog digs and there are some easy solutions you can try to fix the bad behavior!

THE REASONS:

1) Boredom

2) Hunting

3) Cooling Down

4) Learned Behavior

THE SOLUTIONS:

1) The easiest way to break your dogs digging habits is by providing them a location where they are "allowed" to dig. I find that you can teach your dog to dig in a baby pool filled with sand!

- I would recommend burring some of your dogs favorite toys in the sand. Let them watch you do this.

- Once their toys are buried, it is best that you start digging them up, again do this while your dog is watching.

- Rebury the toys and then show your dog where to dig to find the toy! Praise and reward with the toy, treat or physical praise.

- With this method, you are not only giving him a place where he is "allowed" to dig, but you are also fixing his boredom with a fun activity. You are also giving him something to "hunt" for, other than those lizards etc

2) The next option is burring chicken wire in the area where your dog digs. I personally don't like this method as much as the pool with sand.

3) Get ready for it! Burring your dogs poop in the holes he has dug! Most dogs will not dig where they smell their poop. However, you cant just throw the poop in the bottom of the hole...If you do that, he will just dig up the grass and dirt until he hits the spot the poop is in. The best way is to think of it like a cake... a cake has many layers. Ex) Poop, Dirt, Poop, Dirt etc
